The Griek Family

My grandmother from my mothers side is a Griek. Adriana Sjaan Griek married Andries Davidse. As far as I have seen are all the Griek from the island Texel. Everyone born Griek before 1890 was born on Texel.

Although I have put in some serious time researching the name still there are names I have not been able to find all the information from. These are still in "research". If you have any information about them please let me know it would be much appreciated.

This is a small text about the history of Griek written by Miriam Klaassen.

The name Griek

The name is known as far back as the beginning of the 17e century in Den Hoorn, Texel, Netherlands. The family was from the reformed church and in the 18e century it expanded to one of the larges families on Texel. Almost all men were Loods "Guides" like  Hendrik Jacobsz Griek (born ca 1720) who died on his voyage from Oostende to Lissabon.

Some of the members were also diaken and schepen.

In the 19e century some Griek left texel and moved to Den Helder only a few stayed on the island. A small part of the family left for the United States of America. After settling in West Saville, New York, USA. The send a note to ask if other members of the family would like to start a new life there. My grandma left weeks later and stayed 5 years in west Saville until her mom wanted to go back. The moved back to den Helder some time later.

During my search on the Internet I came in contact with Jan Battles. Her family are direct decendants of the griek who came from texel. She send me a lot of material I still have to tag and research. She had a lot of information about the family living in West Saville.

In West Saville lived the family William Griek with Feitje List. they came with the Statendam to the USA.

The Griek who lived in West Saville also joined the army to fight in the Great War. This is there Papers
